I bought this book for my son and daughter. This book has a powerful message about embracing what makes us unique. About loving what makes you, you. As well as what makes us different. The story is very empowering and I would recommend it for anyone's children. This isn't just a book for young girls. My son loved the story! I hope this author continues to write and publish more unique and empowering stories! Love My Kinky, Coily Hair!

I remember my mother having to straighten my hair for special occasions... and me remembering i had to be careful not to have too much fun or I’d mess it up... i love the conclusions that your hair is your heritage.... wear it proudly❣️ I especially like the little boy that encouraged the main character. I can’t wait to share it with my God Daughter. Don’t wait... but it now!

I purchased 3 books for some special little girls and I read it and throughly enjoyed it. The girls really enjoyed hearing the positive message about not being afraid of showing who you are and it’s ok to be different. Wonderful book!!!

My daughter and I fully enjoyed reading this book together. It’s a great “before bed time story” with great illustrations. The author did an excellent job expressing the importance and love of embracing your natural self! I will definitely recommend this to anyone!

How the story came about

Coming from a family of three girls, all who had that very thick hair (myself proudly in the middle) We learned from a young age the patience our hair sometimes required. Once I left for college I welcomed the ease chemically based products brought now that I didn’t have the help of my mother and sisters. However, my hair didn't appreciate my new rushed hair process and became very damaged. I realized I had to remind myself that although my hair may require more time, sometimes there is so much beauty in the process. So, years later when my step-daughter struggled with accepting her hair, I knew from dealing with it myself and working with different community organizations that a lack of self-worth was a common thread among all youth. My debut book “My Kinky Coily Hair” focuses on a young girl named Naomi who battles with individuality and self-acceptance. I wrote this book to remind children of all ages that they all have innate magic and uniqueness within themselves—and that is awesome!
